The 4 Sacred Months in Islam: Which Are They and Why?

Allah says in the Quran: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred." (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36). But which are these four months, and why are they special?

The Four Sacred Months

The Prophet ﷺ explained them in his Farewell Pilgrimage: three consecutive months – Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram – and Rajab, which comes between Jumada al-Thani and Sha'ban (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3197).

  • Dhul-Qa'dah – 11th month
  • Dhul-Hijjah – 12th month (the month of Hajj)
  • Muharram – 1st month
  • Rajab – 7th month

In 1448 AH, Rajab is expected to begin around 10 December 2026, depending on moon sighting.

Why Are They Called "Sacred"?

In Arabic they are called al-ashhur al-hurum – "the sacred (or inviolable) months". Even before Islam, the Arabs stopped fighting during these months, so pilgrims and traders could travel safely to Makkah. Islam confirmed their special status.

"So Do Not Wrong Yourselves in Them"

In the same verse, Allah says: "…so do not wrong yourselves during them." (9:36). Scholars explain that sins in these months are more serious, and good deeds are especially valuable. This does not mean we can do wrong in other months – but it reminds us to be extra careful during these times.

Special Days Within the Sacred Months

  • The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah – among the best days of the year.
  • The Day of 'Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah) – fasting it is a great Sunnah for those not on Hajj.
  • 'Ashura (10 Muharram) – the Prophet ﷺ fasted it and encouraged fasting it.

How Families Can Benefit

  • Mark the sacred months on your family calendar.
  • Increase good deeds: extra Quran, charity and kindness.
  • Avoid arguments and harsh words – practise peace at home, just as fighting was stopped in these months.
  • Teach children the names of the four months with a simple rhyme or flashcards.

A Quick Quiz for Kids
