Friday is a day of many blessings, and one of the greatest is a special moment that many people miss. The Prophet ﷺ spoke about Friday and said: "There is an hour on it in which no Muslim stands in prayer asking Allah for something good except that Allah gives it to him," and he gestured with his hand to show that it is a short time (Sahih al-Bukhari 935, Sahih Muslim 852).
When Is This Hour?
Scholars have mentioned different opinions. Two of the most well-known are:
- From the time the imam sits on the minbar until the prayer is finished.
- The last hour after 'Asr until Maghrib – many scholars considered this the strongest opinion.
The wisdom of not knowing the exact moment is that we keep making du'a throughout the day, especially in the last hour before sunset.
How to Make Du'a – Simple Steps for Everyone
- Begin by praising Allah – for example, "Alhamdulillah" or "SubhanAllah".
- Send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ – "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad".
- Ask with a sincere heart, in any language, for good in this life and the next.
- Be certain Allah hears you and will answer in the best way.
- End again with salawat and "Amin".
What Should We Ask For?
You can ask Allah for anything good. Some ideas:
- Forgiveness of sins and guidance
- Good health for yourself and your family
- Success in school, work and the Hereafter
- Love of the Quran and the ability to memorise it
- Help for Muslims who are suffering around the world
A beautiful Quranic du'a to include:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:201)
A Family "Du'a Time" Every Friday
Choose 10–15 minutes before Maghrib every Friday. Turn off screens, sit together and let each person make their own du'a – children too. Some families keep a "du'a jar" where everyone writes what they want to ask Allah for during the week.
Remember: Allah Is Near
Allah says: "And when My servants ask you about Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the one who calls upon Me when he calls." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186)
