As the month of Rabi al-Akhir comes to an end, Muslims around the world welcome Jumada al-Ula, the fifth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

What does the name mean?

The word Jumada comes from the Arabic root "jamad", linked to dryness or freezing. Many scholars say the month was named at a time when the weather was cold or the land was dry.

An important event in history

In Jumada al-Ula of 8 AH, the Battle of Mu'tah took place. A small Muslim army stood bravely against a much larger force. Great companions like Zayd ibn Harithah, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with them) were martyred, and Khalid ibn al-Walid led the army back safely. The Prophet (peace be upon him) called him "Sayfullah" - the Sword of Allah.

For adults

Every new month is a fresh start. Make a small, steady goal for this month, such as reading one page of the Quran daily or revising a surah you have memorised. "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small." (Bukhari and Muslim)
