Learning Quran as an Adult: How to Start from Zero (Step-by-Step)

Many adults feel embarrassed that they cannot read the Quran, or that they read it with mistakes. If that is you, please know: it is never too late, and you are far from alone. Thousands of adults start learning every year – and many of them read fluently within months.

A Reward Even When It Is Difficult

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The one who is proficient in the Quran will be with the noble and righteous scribes, and the one who reads the Quran and stumbles over it, finding it difficult, will have a double reward.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4937, Sahih Muslim 798)

Step 1: Learn the Arabic Letters

There are 28 Arabic letters. Learn their shapes and, most importantly, their correct sounds. Most adults learn all the letters within a couple of weeks.

Step 2: Complete Noorani Qaida

Noorani Qaida teaches you how letters join, the vowel signs and the basic rules of reading. Adults typically finish it in about 2 to 4 months with regular classes.

Step 3: Start Reading the Quran Slowly

Begin with Juz Amma (the 30th part), where the surahs are short and familiar from prayer. Read slowly and accurately – speed comes later.

Step 4: Improve with Tajweed

Tajweed rules help you pronounce every letter correctly and recite beautifully. Learn them gradually while you read, with a teacher who can correct you.

Step 5: Build a Daily Habit

  • Read for 10 minutes every day, even on busy days.
  • Link it to a prayer, such as after Fajr or Isha.
  • Track your progress in a small notebook or app.

Common Worries Adults Have

“I am too old to learn.”

Adults learn very well when lessons are structured. Many of our students are in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

“I am embarrassed in front of others.”

That is why one-on-one online classes are so popular with adults – it is just you and your teacher, in private.

“I do not have time.”

A 30-minute class two to five times a week fits most schedules, including early mornings, lunch breaks, evenings and weekends.
