A Legacy of Contemporary Jurisprudence and Islamic Economics

SBy Sheikh-ul-Islam Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani September 12, 2026 3 min read

Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani is widely regarded as one of the most influential Islamic jurists (Fuqaha) of the modern era. His scholarly contributions have bridged the gap between classical Islamic law (Shariah) and the complexities of contemporary global systems. Rather than keeping Islamic sciences restricted to traditional seminaries, his life's work has focused on applying Islamic jurisprudence to modern finance, state law, and international affairs.

1. Codification of Modern Islamic Economics

The most monumental contribution of Mufti Taqi Usmani is his foundational role in reviving Islamic Commercial Law (Fiqh al-Muamalat) and developing a viable alternative to the interest-based (Riba) global economic system.

Global Standardization: As the Chairman of the Shariah Board for the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), he helped draft the universal Shariah standards that govern modern Islamic banking worldwide.

Academic Litmus: His book, An Introduction to Islamic Finance, revolutionized the field by translating classical contracts—like Murabahah, Mudarabah, and Musharakah—into practical structures for contemporary multinational banks.

Modern Digital Rulings: In recent years, he has actively addressed modern digital developments, leading critical juristic debates on digital assets. He famously issued a detailed ruling declaring Cryptocurrency as non-compliant with Islamic law (non-Mubah) under its current volatile framework, arguing it lacks the core legal traits of "Mal" (wealth/property) required in Shariah.

2. Lifelong Dedication to Hadith and Exegesis

Beyond economics, his contributions to the core Islamic text sciences—Hadith and Quranic exegesis (Tafsir)—have earned him the title of Sheikh-ul-Islam among traditional circles.

Takmilat Fath al-Mulhim: This massive 6-volume Arabic masterpiece is a comprehensive commentary on Sahih Muslim. It is highly celebrated across both the Arab world and South Asia for resolving complex historical and modern intellectual dilemmas.

The Hadith Encyclopaedia (Madawwanat al-Hadith): Under his direct supervision, an unprecedented, multi-volume encyclopedia is being compiled to digitally catalog and index all known prophetic traditions, a project lauded by scholars in Madinah and beyond.

The Meanings of the Noble Qur'an: He authored a highly accessible, contemporary English translation and brief commentary of the Quran, designed specifically to introduce Islamic theology clearly to Western audiences.

3. Judicial Jurisprudence and Legal Reforms

For two decades, he served as a senior judge on the Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. During this tenure, his judicial decrees became legal benchmarks.

He authored the historic, comprehensive judgment banning all institutional forms of financial interest (Riba) within the country's economic framework.

Throughout his legal career, he staunchly advocated that in a true Islamic state, no individual or state authority is above the law or immune to judicial accountability, cementing the classical Islamic principle of absolute justice.
