A Weekend Quran Circle at Home: A Simple Family Halaqah Plan

The weekend is the perfect time to sit together as a family and learn something about Allah's Book. You do not need a scholar, a big room or a long programme. A small family halaqah (learning circle) of 2030 minutes, once a week, can become one of the most beloved traditions in your home.

Why a Family Halaqah?

The Prophet ? said that whenever people gather to recite the Book of Allah and study it together, tranquillity descends upon them, mercy covers them, the angels surround them and Allah mentions them to those with Him (Sahih Muslim, 2699). Children who see their parents learning the Quran grow up loving it.

A Simple 25-Minute Plan

  • 5 minutes Recitation: one family member recites a short surah. Let the children take turns.
  • 5 minutes Meaning: read the translation of the same surah and ask, "What is Allah teaching us here?"
  • 5 minutes Story: tell a short story of a Prophet or a Companion.
  • 5 minutes One action: choose one small good deed for the week, such as saying salam to everyone at home.
  • 5 minutes Du'a: everyone makes du'a, and the youngest says "Ameen" loudest!

Tips to Keep It Going

  • Fix a time, for example Saturday after Maghrib or Sunday after Fajr.
  • Keep it short and happy. It is better to stop while the children still want more.
  • Give each child a role: reciter, reader, storyteller, du'a leader.
  • Keep a small notebook of the surahs and lessons you have covered.

Suggested Surahs to Start With

Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Asr, Al-Kawthar and Al-Ma'un are short, beautiful and full of lessons for every age.
